The favorites have the shorter odds. These underdogs have a path.
Being favored comes with a price tag, not a permission slip to relax. Three teams enter Sunday with enough questions to make their opponents worth a closer look: the Jets, Commanders and Broncos.
This week’s upset watch combines outright-win markets with matchup vulnerabilities and injury reports. The goal is to identify how a favorite could lose—and what might prevent it.
Updated Friday, October 9, 2026, at approximately 12:50 p.m. ET for Sunday’s Week 5 games. Odds and splits are a fixed snapshot. Confirmed Friday announcements are included; other injury references remain dated to Thursday pending final reports.
How we selected this week’s upset alerts
An upset means the underdog wins outright. Cashing a spread ticket while losing the game does not count. Each selection needs a football reason to question the favorite and supporting market evidence.
We use the NFL public betting board to examine moneyline positioning, then consider injuries and the matchup. Handle is dollars wagered, not a forecast. A large handle share cannot identify who placed the wagers or prove they have an edge.
| Favorite on alert | Underdog | Spread | Moneyline | ML bets / handle | Market win probability* |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jets | Browns | +2.5 | +114 | 77% / 87% | 44–45% |
| Commanders | Giants | +3.5 | +160 | 57% / 85% | 36–38% |
| Broncos | Chargers | +3.5 | +150 | 24% / 74% | 38% |

① New York Jets: Cleveland can make this uncomfortable
Why the favorite is vulnerable
The football concern starts with sustaining drives. Squawka’s four-game matchup statistics list the Jets at 3.4 yards per carry and a 32% third-down conversion rate. New York has also allowed three sacks per game, matching Cleveland’s defensive sack average.
That gives the Browns a plausible route to stalled possessions. If Cleveland can force obvious passing situations, one negative play can turn a promising drive into a punt.
Friday brought confirmation: Breece Hall, Adonai Mitchell and left guard Dylan Parham have been ruled out. Those absences reduce New York’s options and put more pressure on the remaining offense to stay on schedule.
The upset path
Cleveland needs to keep New York behind the chains, avoid giving away short fields and finish its own scoring opportunities. The Browns do not need a parade of explosive plays if they can repeatedly make the Jets earn another first down.
What could spoil it
Cleveland has its own problems up front. Defensive tackles Mason Graham, Mike Hall Jr. and Kalia Davis missed Thursday practice, as did guard Teven Jenkins. A depleted defensive interior could undermine the very early-down stops this upset case requires. The Jets also expect tight end Mason Taylor to return, giving their offense a potential lift.
CLEATZ read: The Jets belong on alert, but this is the narrowest favorite on our list. Cleveland’s case depends on the trenches holding up; enthusiasm from bettors cannot substitute for healthy personnel.
② Washington Commanders: The quarterback is only part of the recovery
Why the favorite is vulnerable
Washington confirmed Friday that Jayden Daniels has been cleared and will start. The remaining concern is his supporting cast: Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs missed Thursday practice with hamstring injuries, while Nick Allegretti did not participate because of hip and Achilles issues. Their final designations were still pending in the reports checked for this update.
Our concern is the supporting cast. If those limitations carry into Sunday, Washington could have its quarterback available without all the protection and receiving options needed to make the offense function comfortably.
The Giants have a potential game-changing presence in the secondary: Washington’s official preview lists Jevon Holland with three interceptions. That does not predict another takeaway, but it gives New York a demonstrated way to punish a mistake.
The market also provides a counterargument: CLEATZ shows Washington’s Kalshi win probability rising from 56% at opening to 62%. Heavy Giants moneyline handle has not translated into broad market agreement that New York is becoming more likely to win.
The upset path
Make Washington sustain drives, prevent Daniels from turning broken plays into easy gains and capitalize when a possession changes hands. New York needs enough offensive consistency to turn defensive opportunities into points rather than immediately returning the ball.
What could spoil it
Daniels’ confirmed return strengthens Washington’s case. Sam Cosmi also returned to full participation Thursday. The Giants have their own uncertainty: Malik Nabers and Andrew Thomas were limited Thursday. Reduced availability for either could make New York’s upset path much harder.
CLEATZ read: Washington’s surrounding injuries create the opening, but Daniels’ return makes this a more conditional alert. Recheck the NFL injury report before treating Thursday’s concerns as Sunday’s reality.
③ Denver Broncos: An uneven offense leaves the door open
Why the favorite is vulnerable
Denver’s offense has not consistently created separation. Reuters reported that the Broncos scored just 24 combined points in their first two road games, both losses. It also reported an expected return to play-calling duties for Sean Payton, while noting that he had not confirmed the switch.
The defensive matchup has questions, too. Patrick Surtain II and Riley Moss both missed Thursday practice. If Denver’s cornerback depth is compromised, Los Angeles may have opportunities to attack coverage without needing to dominate every possession.
The upset path
The Chargers need to keep the game within reach while finding efficient completions against that secondary. The ideal script is sustained possessions, limited negative plays and pressure on Denver to produce long scoring drives.
The moneyline ticket-versus-handle disagreement makes this game especially interesting to monitor. It is a reason to investigate, not evidence that the result has already been figured out.
What could spoil it
Los Angeles has serious availability concerns of its own. Tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt, plus receiver Ladd McConkey, did not practice Thursday. Exploiting a vulnerable secondary is much harder if the quarterback cannot get the ball out cleanly.
CLEATZ read: Denver’s offensive inconsistency makes an upset plausible. The Chargers’ protection is the condition that could invalidate the case. This is the most injury-sensitive selection of the three; the final Friday report had not appeared in the source checked for this update.
An upset alert is not an automatic moneyline bet
A believable win scenario and a worthwhile price are separate questions. These are the win rates required to break even at the quoted moneylines, assuming a standard settled win-or-loss wager:
| Underdog | Quoted moneyline | Break-even win rate |
|---|---|---|
| Browns | +114 | 46.7% |
| Giants | +160 | 38.5% |
| Chargers | +150 | 40.0% |
Those thresholds sit above the rounded market-probability ranges in the first table. That comparison does not establish a betting edge on any of the three. A moneyline recommendation would require a defensible higher win estimate or a better entry price.

What to check before Sunday
Start with final injury designations and active lists. Then check the NFL weather report for the outdoor games. Any change in expected passing conditions should feed into the matchup argument rather than become an automatic underdog pick.
Use passing props and receiving props to examine how player expectations are being priced, and compare the broader slate on our NFL picks page. Related prices are context, not independent proof of an upset.
The Jets, Commanders and Broncos all have a route to trouble. Whether their opponents are worth backing depends on the final personnel picture and the price available when you act. The favorite can be vulnerable without the underdog being a bargain.
