How to Read College Football National Championship Odds

The CLEATZ College Football National Championship Odds Tracker displays the best available American odds for each team from the sportsbooks included in the comparison.

All teams currently have positive odds because no individual program is considered more likely to win the national championship than the rest of the field combined.

Positive American odds show how much profit a successful $100 wager would produce:

  • +650: A $100 wager returns $650 in profit.
  • +2,500: A $100 wager returns $2,500 in profit.
  • +10,000: A $100 wager returns $10,000 in profit.

The original stake is also returned after a winning wager.

To convert positive American odds into implied probability, use this formula:

Implied Probability = 100 ÷ (Odds + 100)

For example, Ohio State and Notre Dame are both listed at +650. That price represents an implied championship probability of approximately 13.3% before accounting for the sportsbook’s margin.

What Does “Best Odds” Mean?

The Best Odds column shows the longest available price found among the sportsbooks included in the tracker.

A longer price produces a larger potential payout. If one sportsbook offers a team at +800 and another offers +700, the +800 price is more favorable to the bettor even though both wagers involve the same team and outcome.

Shopping for the best available line is especially important in a futures market. A difference of several hundred points may substantially change the potential return on a long-shot wager.

The sportsbook abbreviation displayed beside each price identifies where that specific line was available when the tracker was last updated. Odds can change quickly and may differ by state or account.

Current Favorites to Win the National Championship

Ohio State and Notre Dame (+650): New Co-Favorites

Ohio State and Notre Dame share the shortest championship odds at +650.

That price implies approximately a 13.3% probability for each program. Ohio State had previously occupied the top position by itself, but Notre Dame’s move from +700 to +650 over the selected 14-day period has created a tie at the top of the market.

The co-favorite status is significant because it shows that sportsbooks no longer see meaningful separation between Ohio State and Notre Dame entering the season.

Oregon and Texas (+800): Close Behind

Oregon and Texas form the next tier at +800, an implied probability of approximately 11.1%.

Oregon’s price was unchanged during the selected 14-day window. Texas moved from approximately +750 to +800, indicating a modest decline in market confidence.

The difference between +650 and +800 is meaningful, but the market still views Oregon and Texas as legitimate championship favorites rather than secondary contenders.

Georgia (+900), Indiana (+950) and Miami (+1100)

Georgia is fifth at +900, giving the Bulldogs an implied probability of 10%.

Indiana follows at +950 after drifting from approximately +850 during the selected 14-day period. The current price implies a 9.5% probability.

Miami is seventh at +1100, or approximately 8.3% implied probability, after shortening from +1200. Among the seven leading teams, Miami produced one of the clearest positive moves during the latest period.

A Clear Top Seven Has Emerged

The current market contains a noticeable break after Miami.

The first seven teams are all priced between +650 and +1100:

  1. Ohio State: +650
  2. Notre Dame: +650
  3. Oregon: +800
  4. Texas: +800
  5. Georgia: +900
  6. Indiana: +950
  7. Miami: +1100

The next two teams—Texas Tech and Texas A&M—are both +2200.

That jump from +1100 to +2200 means sportsbooks are assigning Miami more than twice the implied championship probability of either Texas Tech or Texas A&M. The market currently views seven teams as the primary championship group, followed by a much larger second tier.

The Second Tier of Championship Contenders

Texas Tech and Texas A&M (+2200)

Texas Tech and Texas A&M share the eighth-shortest price at +2200, which represents an implied probability of approximately 4.3%.

Texas Tech’s price was unchanged during the selected period. Texas A&M also showed no movement over the selected 14-day window, although the tracker indicates some change over the longer comparison period.

Both teams are respected contenders, but their odds remain substantially longer than Miami’s +1100 price.

Alabama and LSU (+2500)

Alabama and LSU are tied at +2500, an implied probability of approximately 3.8%.

Alabama’s price was unchanged. LSU moved from approximately +2200 to +2500 during the selected 14-day period, signaling a measurable decline in market confidence.

Alabama’s position is particularly notable. The Crimson Tide remain a top-10 championship option, but the program is priced behind seven teams and alongside LSU rather than among the clear preseason favorites.

Ole Miss, Oklahoma, USC and Michigan

Ole Miss is next at +3000, followed by Oklahoma and USC at +3500 and Michigan at +4000.

USC has attracted support over the shorter comparison window, although its selected 14-day price is unchanged. Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Michigan were also unchanged over the selected 14-day period.

This group occupies the middle ground between the recognized championship contenders and the deeper long shots.

Biggest 14-Day College Football Championship Odds Movers

Movement should be evaluated in context. A 100-point change near the top of the market can be more meaningful than a 10,000-point adjustment involving a team already priced as an extreme long shot.

Teams Gaining Championship Market Support

Clemson: +20000 to +15000

Clemson produced the largest meaningful move among the teams near the top 30. The Tigers shortened by approximately 5,000 points during the selected 14-day period.

Despite the move, Clemson remains tied with Washington, Louisville and SMU at +15000. The adjustment represents improving sentiment, but not a return to the primary championship tier.

South Carolina: +15000 to +12500

South Carolina shortened by approximately 2,500 points and now owns the 22nd-shortest price on the board.

The Gamecocks remain a long shot, but the move suggests growing sportsbook respect relative to similarly priced SEC programs.

Miami: +1200 to +1100

Miami’s 100-point move is smaller numerically but more important probabilistically. Moving from +1200 to +1100 increased Miami’s implied probability from approximately 7.7% to 8.3%.

Because Miami is already among the favorites, this shift is more consequential than many larger moves near the bottom of the board.

Notre Dame: +700 to +650

Notre Dame shortened by 50 points and joined Ohio State as the championship co-favorite.

This is the most important movement at the very top of the market because it changed the identity of the outright favorite.

Teams Losing Championship Market Support

Houston: +30000 to +35000

Houston lengthened by approximately 5,000 points during the selected 14-day period. The Cougars remain a deep long shot and now sit outside the top 30.

LSU: +2200 to +2500

LSU’s move represents one of the clearest declines among the recognized contenders. The Tigers are now tied with Alabama rather than sitting alongside Texas Tech and Texas A&M at +2200.

Indiana: +850 to +950

Indiana remains sixth on the board, but its championship odds have moved in the wrong direction. The change lowered Indiana’s implied probability from approximately 10.5% to 9.5%.

Texas: +750 to +800

Texas experienced a modest 50-point decline. The Longhorns remain tied with Oregon for the third-shortest odds, so the adjustment has not fundamentally changed their position within the favorite tier.

College Football Championship Dark Horses

Texas Tech (+2200)

Texas Tech is the first team outside the clear top-seven group.

At +2200, the Red Raiders are priced ahead of Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, USC and Michigan. Their placement suggests sportsbooks view Texas Tech as a legitimate contender rather than merely an interesting long shot.

Alabama (+2500)

Alabama’s +2500 price is unusually long relative to the program’s historical championship profile.

That does not automatically make the Crimson Tide a value selection. It does, however, create one of the season’s most interesting market questions: whether Alabama’s longer odds accurately reflect its current roster and competitive position or underestimate the program’s ceiling.

USC (+3500)

USC is tied with Oklahoma at +3500 and has shown positive movement over the tracker’s shorter window.

The Trojans are still outside the top 12, but their current price places them ahead of Michigan and well ahead of Florida, Tennessee and several other recognizable programs.

Clemson (+15000)

Clemson is a much deeper long shot, but its substantial shortening during the selected period makes it a team worth monitoring.

The Tigers’ movement does not establish them as a leading championship threat. It does show that their market position has improved more quickly than that of most teams in the same odds range.

Understanding Movement in Long-Shot Markets

Large numerical moves involving extreme long shots can look more dramatic than they actually are.

For example, a move from +125000 to +75000 is a difference of 50,000 points. However, it changes the raw implied probability only from approximately 0.08% to 0.13%.

By comparison, moving a favorite from +750 to +650 changes its implied probability from approximately 11.8% to 13.3%.

This is why CLEATZ readers should consider both the size of the odds change and the team’s starting probability. Movement near the top of the board usually carries more championship significance than a much larger numerical adjustment near the bottom.

How the College Football Championship Odds Tracker Works

The tracker compares available college football national championship futures and displays the best price found for every team.

Users can select three movement periods:

  • 7D: Compares the current line with the price seven days earlier.
  • 14D: Compares the current line with the price 14 days earlier.
  • 30D: Compares the current line with the price 30 days earlier.

A shortening price indicates that a team’s odds have become lower and its implied championship probability has increased.

A lengthening price indicates that a team’s odds have become longer and its implied probability has decreased.

Odds movement may result from several factors, including injuries, roster news, reported betting activity, sportsbook liability, schedule reassessment and differences between operators. A line move does not reveal the cause by itself.

The tracker is updated weekly and is intended to provide an objective comparison of current prices and market movement—not a guarantee of future results.
