How the MLB Playoff Bracket Works
Twelve teams make the MLB postseason, six per league. The three division winners in the AL and NL are seeded 1 through 3 by record, and the three best remaining teams claim the wild card spots as seeds 4 through 6.
The top two seeds in each league skip the opening round entirely. Seeds 3 through 6 play a best-of-three Wild Card Series — 3 hosts 6, 4 hosts 5, with every game at the higher seed’s ballpark. Winners advance to the best-of-five Division Series, where the 1 seed draws the 4/5 winner and the 2 seed gets the 3/6 winner. The number that matters is WCGB, wild card games back. A “+” means a team holds a playoff spot with a cushion over the cut line; a plain number is how far a chaser sits below it. One thing that changed in 2022 and still trips people up, there are no tiebreaker games anymore. If two teams finish with identical records, the spot is decided mathematically: head-to-head record first, then intradivision record, then interdivision record. Game 163 is history.
