How to Read NHL Betting Splits
NHL betting splits show how wagers are distributed between the two sides of a market. The tool separates that activity into two measurements:
- Bet %: The percentage of tickets placed on a team or total.
- Handle %: The percentage of money wagered on that side.
A team can attract fewer bets while receiving a larger share of the money. That indicates a higher average wager size on that side within the reported sample—not necessarily more bettors backing it.
What Do the Purple Numbers Mean?
The purple numbers highlight a positive gap between handle percentage and bet percentage. A side with 35% of the money and 8% of the bets has a +27 percentage-point gap.
These gaps help identify where money is more concentrated than ticket volume. They are percentage-point differences, not changes in odds or predicted win probabilities.
Moneyline, Puck Line and Total Goals
Moneyline: Compare the share of bets and money backing each team to win.
Puck line: See how wagers are divided against the displayed goal spread, typically +1.5 or −1.5. Puck-line splits can look very different from moneyline splits for the same matchup.
Total goals: Compare betting activity on the over and under at the listed game total.
Do Betting Splits Identify Sharp Money?
Not on their own. A larger handle share than bet share indicates larger average wagers, but it does not establish who placed those bets or whether they have an edge. A small number of large wagers can also influence the percentages.
