How the MLB Playoff Bracket Works
Twelve teams make the MLB postseason, six per league. The three division winners in the AL and NL are seeded 1 through 3 by record, and the three best remaining teams claim the wild card spots as seeds 4 through 6.
The top two seeds in each league skip the opening round entirely. Seeds 3 through 6 play a best-of-three Wild Card Series — 3 hosts 6, 4 hosts 5, with every game at the higher seed’s ballpark. Winners advance to the best-of-five Division Series, where the 1 seed draws the 4/5 winner and the 2 seed gets the 3/6 winner. From there it’s a best-of-seven League Championship Series and a best-of-seven World Series.
That first-round bye is worth real money in October: since the 12-team format arrived in 2022, rested top seeds set their rotations while wild card survivors burn their aces just to get there.
How to Read the Wild Card Standings
The number that matters is WCGB, wild card games back. A “+” means a team holds a playoff spot with a cushion over the cut line; a plain number is how far a chaser sits below it. The dashed chalk line on the board is the season in one image: everyone above it is playing October baseball, everyone below it needs to make up ground.
One thing that changed in 2022 and still trips people up, there are no tiebreaker games anymore. If two teams finish with identical records, the spot is decided mathematically: head-to-head record first, then intradivision record, then interdivision record. Game 163 is history.
